BEHIND THE CAMERA: Q&A
What’s your primary style?
I tend to shoot a lot of candid, I love the natural feel and beauty of people when they forget a camera is even around. I also like taking the extra time to set up formal and posed shots, I think there is something mesmerizing about an epic photo. Another favorite part of photographing weddings is all the detail shots you can find throughout the day. Especially those details you wouldn’t otherwise notice, I love hearing “Wow! I didn’t even see that!”
Do you shoot in color or black and white?
I always shoot in color, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t have any photos in black & white once you receive the final product.
Do you use an assistant? Is there an extra charge for this?
I always have a 2nd shooter (and sometimes 3rd) for weddings. I think having an assistant minimizes any potentially amazing photos that you would otherwise miss from running around and trying to capture everything yourself.
What happens if you get ill?
I will be there. I will still be able to work your wedding, I will still be able to capture beautiful photos! That’s why I think it is so necessary to have an assistant. My assistant is my total support. (In the very, very, veeery unlikely event that I am unable to be present during your wedding day, I will have a photographer that will step in. The show must go on!)
Can other people take photos while you are taking photos?
Yes, I think its fun to capture images and instagram them, or upload them to Facebook during your wedding day. Here’s the big “BUT”… There’s a time and a place!! For instance: During the ceremony = No. During the reception = yes. Enjoying some champagne while getting ready with friends? YES. Snapping photos around me while I’m trying to pose & capture Bride and Groom portraits? NO.
Ultimately the decision is yours, but I think it’s important to consider if you want to risk having a cellphone blocking the big kiss moment post-vows, or having Aunt Carol instagramming you while standing in the middle of the dance floor during the first dance. Spectacular photos are lost all the time due to a trigger happy iPhone photographer (Every family’s got ‘em!).
Will you accept a list of specific photos to be taken?
Yes! I love suggestions! This doesn’t mean I can guarantee that we will be able to capture everything on the list, but that is why I like to set up planning sessions with each one of my wedding couples, this is a perfect time to go over details like shot lists!
What attire will you and/or assistants wear?
I require my team and I to be properly dressed for the event! Which means our default is always formal/semi-formal and easy to work in/get around quickly, unless otherwise specified by my wedding couples.
What time will you arrive and how long will you stay?
I like to arrive approximately 15-30 minutes before photographic coverage is supposed to begin. The duration I stay depends on the package that is chosen.
Should the event last longer than scheduled, will you stay? Extra charge?
Yes. If there is a change in the schedule and the evening is extended, the earlier we know the better. There is an additional hourly charge of $250.
How long after the event will we receive our photos?
My turnaround time is approximately 4-6 weeks. I will post a “sneak peek” of your wedding within the following week from your wedding date. (Helps keep the family and friends at bay until all your photos are finished!)
Do you have liability insurance?
Yes. A must have.
Is this your recent work that I'm seeing on your website?
My wedding portfolio is a compilation of weddings I’ve worked over about the past 4 years. The majority of the photos on my website are from my more recent weddings, but I’ve capture great shots from many different weddings past and present!
Do you provide a written contract?
Yes. Again, a must have!
Is a deposit required? If so, how much?
Yes. To officially reserve a date, I require a minimum 50% deposit at time of booking.
When is the remaining balance after deposit due?
The remaining balance is due a minimum of two weeks prior to your wedding date.
Are there any additional charges not mentioned?
There may be some additional expenses to consider. If your engagement session, wedding or reception takes place outside San Francisco proper, or travel is required during heavy rush hour period there may be some additional fees. Destination weddings will have travel & lodging expenses, contact me for more information.
If your photographic coverage is scheduled to go past 11:59pm on the day of your wedding you man be responsible for providing a hotel room with an appropriate amount of beds.
What are the refunds/cancellation terms?
If for any reason you choose not to use me as your wedding photographer, 50% of the deposit will be refunded up to 90 days before the event date, with the exception of $250.00 if the engagement session is utilized. This value of the engagement session will be deducted from the clients refund before 50% is refunded. No refund will be given within 90 days of the wedding.
Do you have any tips or advice?
DO I? That would be a yes. Read on courageous adventurer.
Pinterest is Not Real Life Y’All
Pinterest has become the best and worst thing to happen to the wedding photography. It’s really wonderful for organizational purposes, and for seeing whats out there and what you like aesthetically. But if you’ve compiled a 20 page booklet of Pinterest sourced images that you want to replicate on your wedding day, be prepared to book an extra day of shooting. Your wedding is not a pre-designed Pinterest event, and you realistically will not have time on your wedding day to complete 100 different posed portraits. Let your special day happen naturally.
Don’t Get Walked On
Your wedding is unique to YOU and your partner, its going to be special no matter what…. So don’t give into a pushy friend, sibling or relative to strong arm you into some crazy/tacky photo idea that they did at their wedding 5 years ago.
Remember, this is YOUR wedding, you get to call the shots and make the decisions!
A Dress Is Meant To Be Worn!
Yes, your dress will live if you let it touch the ground! We will do our best to keep your dress as clean as possible while photographing, but it’s good to remember that your dress is PROBABLY going to get a lil dirty, so carpe diem! Let's go get some awesome shots!!!
If Your Groom Hates Having His Photo Taken…
This is the day for Mr. Right to suck it up. Don’t give into the “I don’t wanna do this anymore”, especially if there are important photos that you still want to capture. If you decide to throw in the towel too early it just leads to “why aren’t there more pictures of my Groom?!?!” afterwards. It ain’t gonna kill anyone to just smile and make it work.
Glitter Doesn’t Make You Glow
I’m gonna let you in on a lil secret, glitter kinda looks like dandruff on camera. Just sayin’.
Help! I May Not Know Your Whole Family...
Yes, I know. You gave us a list with people’s names on it and I should know that you want a picture with Aunt Carol from Florida, who is also your Godmother.
Here’s the problem, I have no freakin’ idea what Aunt Carol looks like and your 200+ guest list does not include mug shots. I shoot many weddings a year, with many Aunt Carol’s. I try very hard to find out who people are, but if this is a must-take image, than take a minute or two, designate someone to hunt down Aunt Carol for me and let’s make it happen!
It’s Impossible To Make 4 Hours of Photos Happen in 30 Minutes.
I am not a Time Lord. (I am, however, a huge nerd... I realize that doesn’t really help, but hey.)
Food Is Fuel!
Every photographer handles this differently. Some require a meal be provided to them. Some bring food. And some leave to go grab fast food. But the fact remains that everybody needs to eat. A fed photographer is a happy photographer!
It’s actually beneficial to you, the client, if we are fed when you are, not after everyone else. Typically we have to stop eating to capture the speeches (and more often than not return to our table to find someone took our untouched plate). If we can slam some grub before dinner is fully served, we’ll be ready to go when the festivities begin in earnest… not scrounging for leftover scraps like hungry wolves.
No You Cannot Have Every Picture We Took
Yes we are professionals, but not every picture we take is a winner. Some are downright unflattering. Some have bad light. Sometimes the flash didn’t fire. So, this is why we edit. We go through all the images and customize your collection to the best captures & moments!
Forewarning Is Rewarding!
If the church lady at your chosen venue is completely scary and beats people with her cane, we, your humble photographers, would like to know. If there is familial conflict that is going to cause issues the day of or if Grandma is blind and needs extra assistance. We need to know. If anything, to simply avoid awkward situations.
Take it from someone who accidently posed the Mother of the Bride with her ex-husband (who didn’t get along) during family photos instead of her current husband… whoopsies.
Whoa Whoa Whoa, SLOW IT DOWN.
So many bridal parties book it down the aisle like there’s cash prize for being the fastest. Later, the wedding couple wonders why I only managed 1 shot of each pairing during the processional. Well, I’ve only seen cheetahs run faster…
DEAP BREATH and take a nice stroooll down that aisle!
Engagement Sessions Are Hangout Sessions Too
It’s the best time to have a relaxed, “getting to know you” session with your shooter. Its good to get a feel of how your photographer directs and even might be able to identify some issues BEFORE the big day that you didn’t realize would be there.
And of course, we will be able to have fun and goof off a little together while capturing some great shots of the two of you!
Control Your ‘Aunt Carol’
This one is a toughy. Everyone and their mom has a camera phone or tablet (with a camera) these days… and everyone looks at your wedding as their chance to rock out and snap some awesome candid photos for you to “ooo” and “ahh” at afterwards.
I cannot even begin to tell you how many cellphones/iPads/cameras/flashes I have to contend with during ceremonies, cake cutting, speeches, first dances, and more. Its just par for the course… Wedding photographers no longer have a background of tear-filled faces watching the bride approach her husband to be, instead there is a wall of devices.
Consider having a device-free ceremony (you’ll definitely be cutting edge!) or at the very least, try to control your overbearing, trigger happy Aunt Carol jumping in the fray of family formals. It’s hugely distracting, especially if one is under a deadline.
Epic Drunk Bridal Parties Slow EVERYTHING Down
It’s your big day, and you might’ve over done it when you planned 15 different stops in 1 hour with your 21 nearest and dearest friends, all the while toast after toast is happening on the bus/limo… Maybe designate your bossiest and most sober pal as the Bridal Party Picture Manager to keep everyone in check. Trust me on this one.
Enjoy That Kiss!
Remember I mentioned to “slow down”? This applies to the kiss at the altar too. If you execute some 1-second plutonic peck on the lips, the chances of me catching it diminish by quite a bit. Extra cool points to those couples who do 2-3 kisses in a row, and make them count.
I know you’re nervous and I know you feel like you’re gonna puke… But, deep breath and SMILE!
We Cannot Read Minds
This would be so super cool and helpful, but alas…not to be. If you don’t have good, open communication with your chosen photographer, you can’t expect them to do everything you envision flawlessly. Chances are we’ve only met face to face a handful of times and I’m going on only what you tell me.
Remember, I WANT to rock it out for you. We all do. The great majority of us pride ourselves on kicking ass and taking names every weekend. But we need to work together to make that happen.
All in all, most of us want chill, easy-to-work-with folks who are happy on their day! Who have realistic expectations…. and don’t call us “hey you”. We all want to have an awesome time… and now you have a little insider info on how to make that happen!
